The History
of Coughlans

Our Story

Coughlans Jewellers (PTY) Ltd was established in 1910 by L.C. Coughlan. The first store was located at 100 Grey Street in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Initially Coughlans provided cash for individuals through the purchasing of their Gold and Diamonds. After seeing a need for lending, Coughlans branched into cash loans using Gold & Gold Jewellery as collateral. As it grew, the company relocated to West Street where it continued to serve the greater Durban communities. Over time Coughlans has adapted to change as well as extended its loan services. All the while continuing to uphold the basic principles of a family run business.

Coughlans uses Gold & Gold Jewellery, already owned by customers, as collateral. Therefore, there is no need for credit checks, reviewing employment history or bank statements. Which means that approval for cash loans is expedited and customers can receive loans within as little as 15 minutes of an in-store application. Additionally, the risk to individuals and businesses is substantially less than with other loan structures. This enables Coughlans to offer customers tailored loan packages with easy loan terms. These give customers the option to redeem their loans in full, repay over three months, with the possibility to extend for another three months, or pay fees to decrease the capital amount. As a result, Coughlans has a 90% redemption rate on pledged items. Coughlan’s also offer customers the option to exchange their Gold & Gold Jewellery for cash.
